The room spun. He needed to sit down, the feeling of pressure rising in his chest. David, a dedicated fan of the author, Eleanor Vance, read the accusations with a growing sense of dread. The evidence was irrefutable. His favorite author, it turned out, was a literary thief.

He gripped the armrest of his chair, knuckles turning white. He felt a sudden, intense heat, like his skin was burning from the inside out. He wanted to lash out, to scream, to break something.

He rose from the chair and began pacing, his steps erratic. All of his cherished books suddenly felt like tainted objects. He felt as if he'd lost a friend.
